    I never use the word "nation" in speaking of the United States.
    I always use the word "Union" or "Confederacy." We are not a
    nation but a union, a confederacy of equal and sovereign States.

So we grew together,
Like to a double cherry, seeming parted,
But yet an union in partition--
Two lovely berries moulded on one stem;

Two of the first, like coats in heraldry,
Due but to one, and crowned with one crest.
