He has called some to be "player-coaches" ... to equip the laity for the ministry they are to fulfill. This equipping ministry is of unique importance. One is appointed to this ministry by the Holy Spirit; therefore it must be undertaken with utmost seriousness. This is a radical departure from the traditional understanding of the roles of the laity and the clergy. The laity had the idea that they were already committed to a "full-time" vocation in the secular world, [and] thus they did not have time -- at least, much time -- to do God's work. Therefore they contributed money to "free" the clergy to have the time needed to fulfill God's ministry. This view is rank heresy. If we follow this pattern, we may continue to do God's work until the Lord comes again and never fulfill God's purpose as it ought to be done.

Commemoration of Martyrs of Papua New Guinea, 1942 I know there are many who have pitied my beginnings, ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/6828

Commemoration of Martyrs of Papua New Guinea, 1942 I know there are many who have pitied my beginnings, thinking it tragic that I had to endure such traumas both as a child and throughout my life, but I confess that I have rather pitied those who have never tasted the bitterness of a trial "too severe." For how is one to appreciate the contrast of light's dawning hope if his soul has never trembled through the dark hours of a nightmare's watch? Or how can one prove God's faithfulness if he never is granted the privilege of wandering through a barren desert, where only pools of Christ's Presence can possibly provide survival? It is a great honor to be apportioned pain. Christ Himself, though God incarnate, learned obedience through what He suffered. Dare we assume that we as His children can be taught by any wiser or kinder instructor than the severity of unwanted pain? We dare not steel ourselves against our trials, running away from the fires where our pruned branches crumble to ashes. For if we escape those flames, we will risk barrenness of soul and will miss out on the beauty that only is born through the ashes of yesterday's grief.

True, a little learning is a dangerous thing, but it still beats total ignorance.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/66204

True, a little learning is a dangerous thing, but it still beats total ignorance.

Thinking is more interesting than knowing, but less interesting than looking

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/44777

Thinking is more interesting than knowing, but less interesting than looking

The fascists cannot argue, so they kill

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/15323

The fascists cannot argue, so they kill

I think we can be pretty close to that again,

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/33112

I think we can be pretty close to that again,

Some men are just as sure of the truth of their opinions as are others of what they know.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/45013

Some men are just as sure of the truth of their opinions as are others of what they know.

The ideal social state is not that in which each gets an equal amount of wealth, but in which each ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/61388

The ideal social state is not that in which each gets an equal amount of wealth, but in which each gets in proportion to his contribution to the general stock.

Accursed be he who plays with the devil. [Ger., Verflucht wer mit dem Teufel spielt.]

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/12163

Accursed be he who plays with the devil. [Ger., Verflucht wer mit dem Teufel spielt.]

It is a disgrace to say one thing and think another; but how much more disgraceful to write one thing ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/51162

It is a disgrace to say one thing and think another; but how much more disgraceful to write one thing and think another!

Chill penury repress'd their noble rage, And froze the genial current of the soul.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/47887

Chill penury repress'd their noble rage, And froze the genial current of the soul.

Lady, you know no rules of charity, Which renders good for bad, blessings for curses.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/5710

Lady, you know no rules of charity, Which renders good for bad, blessings for curses.

I am young. The Scriptures indeed were at hand for the study of those who could avail themselves of them, but St. Iranaeus does not hesitate to speak of whole races who had been converted to Christianity, without being able to read them. To be unable to read or write was in those times no evidence of want of learning; the hermits of the deserts were, in one sense of the word, illiterate, yet the great St. Anthony, though he knew not letters, was a match in disputation for the learned philosophers who came to try him.

Our friends interpret the world and ourselves to us, if we take them tenderly and truly.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/64814

Our friends interpret the world and ourselves to us, if we take them tenderly and truly.
