Those words have been interpreted as though they described the Law as a preparatory education, continued at a higher stage by Christ. That, however, is not quite what Paul meant. The "pedagogue" in Greek society was not a schoolmaster, he did not give lessons. He was a slave who accompanied a boy to school, and both waited upon him and exercised a supervision which interfered with the boy's freedom of action. He is, in fact, a figure in the little allegory which Paul gives us to illustrate the position of the People of God before Christ came. There was a boy left heir to a great estate. He was a minor, and so must have guardians and trustees. He was as helpless in their hands as if he had been a slave. He must live on the allowance they gave him, and follow their wishes from day to day. They gave him a "pedagogue" to keep him out of mischief. He could not please himself, or realize his own purposes and ambitions. Yet all the time he was the heir; the estate was his, and no one else's. Just so the People of God, the Divine Commonwealth, was cramped and fettered by ignorance and evil times. It remained in uneasy expectation of one day coming into active existence. At last the heir came of age: guardians and trustees abdicated their powers, and the grown man possessed in full realization all that was his. So now the fettered life of the Divine Commonwealth bursts its bonds and comes into active existence... The intervention of law was not a reversal of God's original and eternal purpose of pure love and grace towards men, it only subserved that purpose, while it seemed to contradict it, just as the presence of the "pedagogus" might seem to the high-spirited young heir quite contrary to the rights secured to him by his father's will.

Ambition is the last refuge of the failure.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/14940

Ambition is the last refuge of the failure.

I believe that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/1441

I believe that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another.

‘Nouveau riche’ is better than ‘no riche.’

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/14768

‘Nouveau riche’ is better than ‘no riche.’

A friend is one who knows us, but loves us anyway.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/16823

A friend is one who knows us, but loves us anyway.

America's best buy is a telephone call to the right man.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/22181

America's best buy is a telephone call to the right man.

Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/17232

Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it

It is nought good a sleeping hound wake.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/12656

It is nought good a sleeping hound wake.

Mrs. Crupp had indignantly assured him that there wasn't room to swing a cat there; but as Mr. Dick justly ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/5313

Mrs. Crupp had indignantly assured him that there wasn't room to swing a cat there; but as Mr. Dick justly observed to me, sitting down on the foot of the bed, nursing his leg, "You know, Trotwood, I don't want to swing a cat. The prophets should have taught us a different lesson. They should have led us to feel that it was a solemn duty, not to conceal, but to bring forward all the evidence which proves, not that one country is better than another, or one portion of the church better than another, but that there is a principle of decay, a tendency to apostasy in all, and that no comfort can come from merely balancing symptoms of good here against symptoms of evil there, no comfort from considering whether we are a little less contentious, a little less idolatrous than our neighbors.

What shall I do with all the days and hours That must be counted ere I see thy face? ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/145

What shall I do with all the days and hours That must be counted ere I see thy face? How shall I charm the interval that lowers Between this time and that sweet time of grace?

Lack of loyalty is one of the major causes of failure in every walk of life

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/25987

Lack of loyalty is one of the major causes of failure in every walk of life

Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/28120

Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. And again, in any prosperity of ourselves or others, we must not omit to testify our recognition of God's hand by praise and thanksgiving. Lastly, we must in all our prayers carefully avoid wishing to confine God to certain circumstances, or prescribe to him the time, place, or mode of action. In like manner, we are taught by [the Lord's] prayer not to fix any law or impose any condition upon him, but leave it entirely to him to adopt whatever course of procedure seems to him best, in respect of method, time, and place. For, before we offer up any petition for ourselves, we ask that his will may be done, and by so doing place our will in subordination to his, just as if we had laid a curb upon it, that, instead of presuming to give law to God, it may regard him as the ruler and disposer of all its wishes.

March: Its stone, Bloodstone.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/26369

March: Its stone, Bloodstone.

Progress is the injustice each generation commits with regard to its predecessors.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/26857

Progress is the injustice each generation commits with regard to its predecessors.

Feast of Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome, Teacher, 604 All that which our blessed Saviour wrought in his ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/6648

Feast of Gregory the Great, Bishop of Rome, Teacher, 604 All that which our blessed Saviour wrought in his mortal body, he did it for our example and instruction, to the end that, following his steps, according to our poor ability, we might without offense pass over this present life.

I could have better spared a better man. -King Henry IV.
