Therefore I do not see how it is possible in the nature of things for any revival of religion to continue long. For religion must necessarily produce both industry and frugality, and these cannot but produce riches. But as riches increase, so will pride, anger, and love of the world in all its branches. How then is it possible that Methodism, that is a religion of the heart, though it flourishes now as the green bay tree, should continue in this state? For the Methodists in every place grow diligent and frugal; consequently, they increase in goods. Hence, they proportionately increase in pride, in anger, in the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of life. So, although the form of religion remains, the spirit is swiftly vanishing away. Is there no way to prevent ... this continual decay of pure religion?

Some people are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/57495

Some people are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple.

The ability to see beauty is the beginning of our moral sensibility. That the Christian religion is only a declaration of God's goodwill to us, without any expectation of duty from us -- this is an error which one could hardly think could ever enter into any who have the liberty to read the Bible and attend to what they read and find there. The three great promises of the gospel are all very expressly contained in our Saviour's first sermon upon the mount. There we find the promise of blessedness often repeated but never absolutely made, but upon certain conditions, plainly required on our part, as repentance, righteousness, humility, mercy, peaceableness, meekness, patience. Forgiveness of sins is likewise promised, but only to those who make a penitent acknowledgement of them and ask forgiveness for them., and are ready to grant that forgiveness to others which they beg of God for themselves. The gift of God's Holy Spirit is likewise promised, but it is upon condition of our earnest and importunate prayer to God. The gospel is everywhere full of precepts enjoining duty and obedience upon our part, as well as of promises on God's part, assuring blessings to us -- nay, full of terrible threatenings also if we disobey the precepts of the gospel.

I am about to -- or I am going to -- die; either expression is used.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/24141

I am about to -- or I am going to -- die; either expression is used.

There will never be great architects or great architecture without great patrons.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/3030

There will never be great architects or great architecture without great patrons.

Provoking, isn't it? that when one is most in need of sensible words, one finds them not.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/62056

Provoking, isn't it? that when one is most in need of sensible words, one finds them not.

Some suffer from real misfortunes. This, I believe, is partly due to man's enormous technical successes, which make him feel master of the human situation. But it is also partly due to our scholars and experts. By the time they have finished with their dissection of the New Testament and with their explaining away as "myth" all that they find disquieting or unacceptable to the modern mind, the Christian way of life is little more than humanism with a slight tinge of religion.

As the grace grows nearer my theology is growing strangely simple, and it begins and ends with Christ as the ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/59090

As the grace grows nearer my theology is growing strangely simple, and it begins and ends with Christ as the only Savior of the lost.

The ox longs for the gaudy trappings of the horse; the lazy pack-horse would fain plough. Make me truly thankful for that portion of health which Thy mercy has restored, and enable me to use the remains of life to Thy glory and my own salvation. Take not from me, O Lord, Thy Holy Spirit. Extinguish in my mind all sinful and inordinate desires. Let me resolve to do that which is right, and let me by Thy help keep my resolutions.
