The prophets were men called by God to serve as His messengers to a stubborn and unheeding people. They were always careful to point out that they were not voicing their own wisdom. Their warnings, entreaties, and promises were always prefaced by the awesome proclamation: "Thus says the Lord..." When the prophets did engage in prognostication, they usually were concerned with events which were fairly close at hand, such as the Assyrian conquest of Israel and the Babylonian conquest of Judah (both of which they foretold with deadly accuracy). But occasionally a prophet's vision ranged farther into the future, to the day when God would enter into a new covenant with his rebellious children. The hope of reconciliation was often linked with the coming of a very particular person, a Messiah or Savior. What made the prophets so sure that they had a right--nay, a duty, to speak in the name of God? It is clear from their writings that they were not megalomaniacs who confused their own thoughts with the voice of God. On the contrary, they were humble men, awe-stricken by the responsibilities thrust upon them... The prophets minced no words in their indictments of the sins of Israel and Judah, and they trod especially hard on the toes of the rich, the powerful, and the pious. The Establishment responded then as some church members are wont to respond now when a preacher speaks out on controversial public issues: "One should not preach of such things!" (Micah 2:6).

If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/16359

If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise.

Those who are more adapted to the active life can prepare themselves for contemplation in the practice of the active ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/1423

Those who are more adapted to the active life can prepare themselves for contemplation in the practice of the active life, while those who are more adapted to the contemplative life can take upon themselves the works of the active life so as to become yet more apt for contemplation.

We closed 2001 with exceptional financial results, achieving record revenues, strong cash flow and enhanced operational profitability while lowering our ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/38627

We closed 2001 with exceptional financial results, achieving record revenues, strong cash flow and enhanced operational profitability while lowering our debt by more than $430 million,

It is the difference between men and women, not the sameness, that creates the tension and the delight.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/59013

It is the difference between men and women, not the sameness, that creates the tension and the delight.

I have been a soldier, Till the helm hath worn those aged temples bare.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/50646

I have been a soldier, Till the helm hath worn those aged temples bare.

For parlor use, the vague generality is a life saver.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/35527

For parlor use, the vague generality is a life saver.

Give us the luxuries of life, and we will dispense with its necessities.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/26084

Give us the luxuries of life, and we will dispense with its necessities.

(Domestic violence) is such a dark social issue, we opted to have a fun event.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/33344

(Domestic violence) is such a dark social issue, we opted to have a fun event.

It is not good a sleping hound to wake.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/56628

It is not good a sleping hound to wake.

The end crowns all, And that old common arbitrator, Time, Will one day end it. -Troilus and Cressida.
