But the little mark on the soul may be much the same in both. Each has done something to himself which, unless he repents, will make it harder for him to keep out of the rage the next time he is tempted, and will make the rage worse when he does fall into it. Each of them, if he seriously turns to God, can have that twist in the central man straightened out again: each is, in the long run, doomed if he will not.

He serves me most who serves his country best.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/45786

He serves me most who serves his country best.

For well-dowered wife, credit, friends, birth and beauty, all-powerful money gives them all.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/50222

For well-dowered wife, credit, friends, birth and beauty, all-powerful money gives them all.

To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/58180

To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first.

It is becoming impossible for those who mix with their fellow men to believe that the grace of God is ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/7472

It is becoming impossible for those who mix with their fellow men to believe that the grace of God is distributed denominationally.

Thinke of ease, but worke on.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/49968

Thinke of ease, but worke on.

Winter lies too long in country towns; hangs on until it is stale and shabby, old and sullen.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/61711

Winter lies too long in country towns; hangs on until it is stale and shabby, old and sullen.

It sounds extraordinary but it’s a fact that balance sheets can make fascinating reading.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/15681

It sounds extraordinary but it’s a fact that balance sheets can make fascinating reading.

We wanted to do more.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/41715

We wanted to do more.

(Hitters) know when guys are really cheesing it up there in the 98s, 97s, they know that, so they know ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/30458

(Hitters) know when guys are really cheesing it up there in the 98s, 97s, they know that, so they know how to get it ready a little bit earlier where they're cheating on fastballs.

History is a vision of God's creation on the move.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/19384

History is a vision of God's creation on the move.

Over the two games Liverpool fully deserved to go through,

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/40195

Over the two games Liverpool fully deserved to go through,

God's child in Christ adopted -- Christ my all -- What that earth boasts were not lost cheaply, rather Than ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/7842

God's child in Christ adopted -- Christ my all -- What that earth boasts were not lost cheaply, rather Than forfeit that blest name, by which I call The Holy One, the Almighty God, my Father? -- Father! in Christ we live, and Christ in Thee -- Eternal Thou and everlasting we. A mother is born, too of ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/45524

Frederick Buechner,'Whistling in the Dark' When a child is born, a father is born. A mother is born, too of course, but at least for her it's a gradual process. Body and soul, she has nine months to get used to what's happening. She becomes what's happening. But for even the best-prepared father, it happens all at once. On the other side of a plate-glass window, a nurse is holding up something roughly the size of a loaf of bread for him to see for the first time. Even if he should decide to abandon it forever ten minutes later, the memory will nag him to the grave. He has seen the creation of the world. It has his mark on it. He has its mark on him. Both marks are, for better or for worse, indelible. All sons, like all daughters, are prodigals if they're smart. Assuming the Old Man doesn't run out on them first, they will run out on him if they are to survive, and if he's smart he won't put up too much of a fuss. A wise father sees all this coming, and maybe that's why he keeps his distance from the start. He must survive too. Whether they ever find their way home again, none can say for sure, but it's the risk he must take if they're ever to find their way at all. In the meantime, the world tends to have a soft spot in its heart for lost children. Lost fathers have to fend for themselves. Even as the father lays down the law, he knows that someday his children will break it as they need to break it if ever they're to find something better than law to replace it. Until and unless that happens, there's no telling the scrapes they will get into trying to lose him and find themselves. Terrible blnders will be made-dissapointments and failures, hurts and losses of every kind. And they'll keep making them even after they've found themselves too, of course, because growing up is a process that goes on and on. And every hard knock they ever get, knocks the father even harder still, if that's possible, and if and when they finally come through more or less in one piece at the end, there's maybe no rejoicing greater than his in all creation. -Fatherhood.

Be happy.
