But if Christ is amongst us, then it is necessary that we sometimes yield up our own opinion for the sake of peace. Who is so wise as to have a perfect knowledge of all things? Therefore trust not too much to thine own opinion, but be ready also to hear the opinion of others. The prophets were men called by God to serve as His messengers to a stubborn and unheeding people. They were always careful to point out that they were not voicing their own wisdom. Their warnings, entreaties, and promises were always prefaced by the awesome proclamation: "Thus says the Lord..." When the prophets did engage in prognostication, they usually were concerned with events which were fairly close at hand, such as the Assyrian conquest of Israel and the Babylonian conquest of Judah (both of which they foretold with deadly accuracy). But occasionally a prophet's vision ranged farther into the future, to the day when God would enter into a new covenant with his rebellious children. The hope of reconciliation was often linked with the coming of a very particular person, a Messiah or Savior. What made the prophets so sure that they had a right--nay, a duty, to speak in the name of God? It is clear from their writings that they were not megalomaniacs who confused their own thoughts with the voice of God. On the contrary, they were humble men, awe-stricken by the responsibilities thrust upon them... The prophets minced no words in their indictments of the sins of Israel and Judah, and they trod especially hard on the toes of the rich, the powerful, and the pious. The Establishment responded then as some church members are wont to respond now when a preacher speaks out on controversial public issues: "One should not preach of such things!" (Micah 2:6).

There are countless ways of attaining greatness, but any road to reaching one's maximum potential must be built on a ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/18243

There are countless ways of attaining greatness, but any road to reaching one's maximum potential must be built on a bedrock of respect for the individual, a commitment to excellence, and a rejection of mediocrity.

Competition is a process or variety of habitual behavior that grows out of a habit of mind.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/9220

Competition is a process or variety of habitual behavior that grows out of a habit of mind.

The public! the public! how many fools does it require to make the public? [Fr., Le public! le public! combien ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/52457

The public! the public! how many fools does it require to make the public? [Fr., Le public! le public! combien faut-il de sots pour faire un public?]

At the close of the day, when the hamlet is still And mortals the sweets of forgetfulness prove, When ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/14246

At the close of the day, when the hamlet is still And mortals the sweets of forgetfulness prove, When nought but the torrent is heard on the hill And nought but the nightingale's song in the grove.

Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/52912

Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away, and that in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.

It is the mark of an inexperienced man not to believe in luck.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/26047

It is the mark of an inexperienced man not to believe in luck.

Look to your health; and if you have it, praise God, and value it next to a good conscience; for ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/18934

Look to your health; and if you have it, praise God, and value it next to a good conscience; for health is the second blessing that we mortals are capable of; a blessing that money cannot buy.

God's justice, tardy though it prove perchance, Rests never on the track until it reach Delinquency.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/23640

God's justice, tardy though it prove perchance, Rests never on the track until it reach Delinquency.

No work is of such merit as to instruct from a mere cursory perusal.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/51174

No work is of such merit as to instruct from a mere cursory perusal.
