By their emphasis upon the primacy of individual justification, they deny the immediate social character and impact of the justification of the Jews and Gentiles, and they obstruct or delay the changes in common life which belong to the "new creation".

Politics is not an exact science.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/47630

Politics is not an exact science.

Edged tools are dangerous things to handle, and not infrequently do much hurt.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/54699

Edged tools are dangerous things to handle, and not infrequently do much hurt.

I concede!

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/22243

I concede!

A good teacher is a determined person.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/66206

A good teacher is a determined person.

A Christian marriage is [not] one with no problems or even a marriage with fewer problems. I get upset about it, because I feel that we American Christians make too much of it, and too little. Too little of it, because we pile all sorts of other things onto it, including some that have only the feeblest connection with the Event it is supposed to commemorate. If God did become a man, in any real sense, it is the most important thing that ever happened. Surely we, who believe it, could well devote one day a year to uninterrupted contemplation of the fact, and let Saturnalia fall on the winter solstice, where it belongs. On the other hand, we make so much of the actual birth, and forget the things that make it more than just the birth of a baby (though even that is, in Walt Whitman's phrase, "miracle enough to stagger sextillions of infidels") -- more, even, than the birth of the greatest man who ever lived. We forget the promise to Eve of a descendant who will solve the problem of Evil; the promise to Abraham of one by whom all mankind will be blessed; the promise to Moses of a greater prophet than he, to arise from his people; and the promise to David of a Son who would be his Master. We forget about the eternal Purpose behind it all: it's like telling a story and leaving out the point. Yes, it is true that God gave us His Son, and so maybe we ought also to give gifts -- but what, and to whom? It is also true that God gave us Himself, and the only sensible response to that is to give ourselves to Him. There is nothing else that He wants from us, or, if there is something, He can take it. Only I, my ego, my heart, is truly mine to give or to withhold -- and is therefore the appropriate gift to Him.

We have met the enemy and he is us.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/13866

We have met the enemy and he is us.

Governments need armies to protect them against their enslaved and oppressed subjects.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/47437

Governments need armies to protect them against their enslaved and oppressed subjects.

On such an occasion as this, All time and nonsense scorning, Nothing shall come amiss, And we ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/15586

On such an occasion as this, All time and nonsense scorning, Nothing shall come amiss, And we won't go home till morning.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/20795

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Innovators are inevitably controversial.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/9544

Innovators are inevitably controversial.

The front row of people is 50 feet away, which throws you off. It is surely life itself that makes against belief in most cases. It is the contradiction in real life between any image of God as good -- whether God is "above", "beneath", or "within" -- that makes men atheists. Yet how few books and how few sermons touch on this basic problem! Our theological libraries are crammed with books devoted to every aspect of textual and higher criticism of the Bible; but of genuine theological thinking about the things which drive religion from men's hearts, there is appallingly little to be found. The archaeology of Christian origins seems largely to have replaced genuine theology.

What protectionism teaches us, is to do to ourselves in time of peace what enemies seek to do to us ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/15815

What protectionism teaches us, is to do to ourselves in time of peace what enemies seek to do to us in time of war.

Water trotted is as good as oates.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/50040

Water trotted is as good as oates.

Lawyers are men who hire out their words and anger.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/24368

Lawyers are men who hire out their words and anger.

Few people even scratch the surface, much less exhaust the contemplation of their own experience.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/14735

Few people even scratch the surface, much less exhaust the contemplation of their own experience.

You don't see major corporations abandoning their e-mail infrastructure, but they are beginning to seek outsourcing to handle things like ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/34610

You don't see major corporations abandoning their e-mail infrastructure, but they are beginning to seek outsourcing to handle things like remote mail and calendaring, ...
