To deny God, man must ultimately deny that there is any law or reality. The full implications of this were seen in the [19th] century by two profound thinkers, one a Christian and the other a non-Christian. [Friedrich W.] Nietzsche recognized fully that every atheist is an unwilling believer to the extent that he has any element of justice or order in his life, to the very extent that he is even alive and enjoys life. In his earlier writings, Nietzsche first attempted the creation of another set of standards and values, affirming life for a time, until he concluded that he could not affirm life itself nor give it any meaning, any value, apart from God. Thus Nietzsche's ultimate counsel was suicide; only then, [he asserted] can we truly deny God: and in his own life, this brilliant thinker -- one of the clearest in his description of modern Christianity and the contemporary issue -- did in effect commit a kind of psychic suicide. The same concept was powerfully developed by [Fyodor M.] Dostoyevski, particularly in The Possessed, or, more literally, the Demon-Possessed. Kirilov, a thoroughly Nietzschean character, is very much concerned with denying God, asserting that he himself is God and that man does not need God. But at every point, Kirilov finds that no standard or structure in reality can be affirmed without ultimately asserting God, that no value can be asserted without being ultimately de rived from the Triune God. As a result, Kirilov committed suicide as the only apparently practical way of denying God and affirming himself -- for to be alive was to affirm this ontological deity in some fashion.

Love is an emotion that is based on an opinion of women that is impossible for those who have had ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/65922

Love is an emotion that is based on an opinion of women that is impossible for those who have had any experience with them.

Thou who hast The fatal gist of beauty.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/3842

Thou who hast The fatal gist of beauty.

This is something of a surprise just because the backlash was so strong last year to reinstate full funding.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/32180

This is something of a surprise just because the backlash was so strong last year to reinstate full funding.

I had hired coach Frank Nails that season and he asked me to speak at the pep rally. St. Polycarp, Letter to the Philippians February 24, 2000 In church government... our primary concern is to reflect the nature of God. Christ became man in order that He might redeem men from their fallen state, from their selfishness and self-isolating divisions from God and from each other; so that, gathered together in one in Him, man may offer to God that likeness to Himself in love for which he was created. Church government is primarily concerned with this: with worship, with the drawing of the whole life of the whole world into this reflection of the nature of God. It is secondly -- and only secondly -- concerned with the quarrels and peccadilloes of those who are not, as a matter of fact, imitating God's nature very faithfully.

Today the journey is ended, I have worked out the mandates of fate; Naked, along, undefended, I ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/57264

Today the journey is ended, I have worked out the mandates of fate; Naked, along, undefended, I knock at the Uttermost Gate. Behind is life and its longing, Its trial, its trouble, its sorrow, Beyond is the Infinite Morning Of a day without a tomorrow.

At the throng'd levee bends the venal tribe: With fair but faithless smiles each varnish'd o'er, Each smooth as ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/10456

At the throng'd levee bends the venal tribe: With fair but faithless smiles each varnish'd o'er, Each smooth as those that mutually deceive, And for their falsehood each despising each.

Who could tell such a story with dry eyes?

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/51843

Who could tell such a story with dry eyes?

The restrictions are a big factor.
