Jesus said, What the masters in Israel teach, what the Pharisees and the Scribes teach, is perfectly correct. There was no dogma which was the cause of controversy between Jesus and the nation; there was no new custom that Jesus introduced: He went into the Temple every day, He observed the ordinances and festivals of Israel. What was the subject of dispute and controversy between Jesus and the Jews? It was no doctrine, it was no innovation, it was Jesus Himself whom they rejected. There was an antipathy in them to the person of Jesus: it was the Lord Himself whom they hated, because they hated the Father... But Jesus knew... that it was because He was one with the Father, because He was the express image of His being, because He was the perfect manifestation of the character of God, that they hated Him; and therefore Jesus was pained, not because they hated Him, but because they hated in Him the Father.

'Tis not what man Does which exalts him, but what man Would do.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/11671

'Tis not what man Does which exalts him, but what man Would do.

He paints a dolphin in the woods, a boar in the waves. [Lat., Delphinum sylvis appingit, fluctibus aprum.]

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/20522

He paints a dolphin in the woods, a boar in the waves. [Lat., Delphinum sylvis appingit, fluctibus aprum.]

Then farewell, Horace; whom I hated so, Not for thy faults, but mine.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/15444

Then farewell, Horace; whom I hated so, Not for thy faults, but mine.

Cheek . . . Flushing white and mellow'd red; Gradual tints, as when there glows In snowy ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/14869

Cheek . . . Flushing white and mellow'd red; Gradual tints, as when there glows In snowy milk the bashful rose.

It was just him and me. This fact ought not to be taken to imply, however, that such an effort is unjustifiable and necessarily useless. The distinctiveness of the Biblical approach is its immediacy. The theistic proofs for God's existence constitute a laborious, painstaking, and patient justification of theism. They attempt to set forth in rational argument what the soul grasps intuitively. But for the Bible, the deepest proof of God's existence is just life itself. The knowledge of God and man's knowledge of himself are closely intertwined. If only God could be written off neatly and cleanly, how simple things would be! But the hound of heaven pads after us all. He does not let us go. There is no escaping him...; when least expected, he closes in. The explanation for this is man's creation in the image of God. His identity is known theologically, in relation to the God who as a man in his true significance cannot survive permanently in isolation from his Maker. Without God, man is the chance product of unthinking fate, and so of little worth. The current loss of identity and the emergence of the faceless man in today's culture are testimony to the effects of losing our God. The knowledge of God is given in the same movement in which we know ourselves.

The discussions of every age are filled with the issues on which its leading schools of thought differ.
