Where it is possible that fear should exist it is well that it should exist, cause continual uneasiness, and be cast out by nothing less than love.... Until love, which is the truth towards God, is able to cast out fear, it is well that fear should hold; it is a bond, however poor, between that which is and that which creates -- a bond that must be broken, but a bond that can be broken only by the tightening of an infinitely closer bond. Verily God must be terrible to those that are far from Him: for they fear He will do -- yea, is doing -- with them what they do not, cannot desire, and can ill endure... While they are such as they are, there is much in Him that cannot but affright them: they ought, they do well, to fear Him... To remove that fear from their hearts, save by letting them know His love with its purifying fire, a love which for ages, it may be, they cannot know, would be to give them up utterly to the power of evil. Persuade men that fear is a vile thing, that it is an insult to God, that He will have none of it -- while they are yet in love with their own will, and slaves to every movement of passionate impulse -- and what will the consequence be? That they will insult God as a discarded idol, a superstition, a falsehood, as a thing under whose evil influence they have too long groaned, a thing to be cast out and spit upon. After that, how much will they learn of Him?

What a blind person needs is not a teacher but another self.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/4326

What a blind person needs is not a teacher but another self.

There is no darkness but ignorance.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/20375

There is no darkness but ignorance.

Hail to thee, lady! and the grace of heaven, Before, behind thee, and on every hand, Enwheel thee round!

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/18088

Hail to thee, lady! and the grace of heaven, Before, behind thee, and on every hand, Enwheel thee round!

One of Satan's shepherdesses caught And meant to stamp him with her master's mark.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/51709

One of Satan's shepherdesses caught And meant to stamp him with her master's mark.

On the soft bed of luxury most kingdoms have expired.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/26091

On the soft bed of luxury most kingdoms have expired.

Men often applaud an imitation and hiss the real thing.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/10600

Men often applaud an imitation and hiss the real thing.

Innocence of heart and violence of feeling are necessary in any kind of superior achievement: The arts cannot exist without ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/385

Innocence of heart and violence of feeling are necessary in any kind of superior achievement: The arts cannot exist without them.

Nothing but heaven itself is better than a friend who is really a friend.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/19070

Nothing but heaven itself is better than a friend who is really a friend.

Physics does not change the nature of the world it studies, and no science of behavior can change the essential ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/46578

Physics does not change the nature of the world it studies, and no science of behavior can change the essential nature of man, even though both sciences yield technologies with a vast power to manipulate the subject matters.

This is a slow but perceptible fraying of our employment-based system, ... what I call the drip, drip, drip (of ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/34060

This is a slow but perceptible fraying of our employment-based system, ... what I call the drip, drip, drip (of health coverage).

When the effective leader is finished with his work, the people say it happened naturally.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/24418

When the effective leader is finished with his work, the people say it happened naturally.

The things we hate about ourselves aren't more real than things we like about ourselves.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/63314

The things we hate about ourselves aren't more real than things we like about ourselves.

Quirky is sexy, like scars or chipped teeth.
