It is not enough to express formal belief in the "Incarnation" or in the "Divinity of. Christ"; the staggering truth must be accepted afresh -- that in this vast, mysterious universe, of which we are an almost infinitesimal part, the great Mystery, Whom we call God, has visited our planet in Person. It is from this conviction that there springs unconquerable certainty and unquenchable faith and hope. It is not enough to believe theoretically that Jesus was both God and Man; not enough to admire, respect, and even worship Him; it is not even enough to try to follow Him. The reason for the insufficiency of these things is that the modern intelligent mind, which has had its horizons widened in dozens of different ways, has got to be shocked afresh by the audacious central Fact -- that, as a sober matter of history, God became one of us.

Oh, for one hour of blind old Dandolo, Th' octogenarian chief, Byzantium's conquering foe!

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/1727

Oh, for one hour of blind old Dandolo, Th' octogenarian chief, Byzantium's conquering foe!

Someday man will harness the rise and fall of the tides, imprison the power of the sun, and release atomic ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/54870

Someday man will harness the rise and fall of the tides, imprison the power of the sun, and release atomic power.

We have to plant new ones for the next centuries.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/36626

We have to plant new ones for the next centuries.

'Tis a sort of duty to be rich, that it may be in one's power to do good, riches being ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/61442

'Tis a sort of duty to be rich, that it may be in one's power to do good, riches being another word for power.

Usually you can point the finger at the consumers of intel ... the political and military leaders

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/42192

Usually you can point the finger at the consumers of intel ... the political and military leaders

It's another tough loss. What causes this odd state of affairs? The root cause is the same as in most cases of error in the Church--the intruding of rationalistic speculations, the passion for systematic consistency, a reluctance to recognize the existence of mystery and to let God be wiser than men, and a consequent subjecting of Scripture to the supposed demands of human logic. People see that the Bible teaches man's responsibility for his actions; they do not see how this is consistent with the sovereign Lordship of God over those actions. They are not content to let the two truths live side by side, as they do in the Scriptures, but jump to the conclusion that, in order to uphold the biblical truth of human responsibility, they are bound to reject the equally biblical and equally true doctrine of divine sovereignty, and to explain away the great number of texts that teach it. The desire to over-simplify the Bible by cutting out the mysteries is natural to our perverse minds, and it is not surprising, that even good men should fall victims to it.

It's always frustrating when you get good looks and the ball doesn't go in the hole.
