The high priest placed both his hands on the head of a goat and confessed all the sins of the nation. Then the goat carrying the sins of the people is sent off into the wilderness. But it is not just a piece of history! There is in the modern world a quest for scapegoats though with one enormous difference. Whenever there is an accident or a tragedy, there is a search for someone to blame. Often all the modern means of communication join in; accusations, resignations, demands for compensation and the rest. If a guilty person is found, then an orgy of condemnation and vilification. Rarely a sense of, there but for the grace of God go I. Instead of dealing gently with one another's failure because of our own vulnerability to criticism, there is the presumption that we are in a fit condition to judge and to condemn. The enormous difference? The original scapegoat followed a confession of the sins of the people. There was no blaming of someone else, but an admission of guilt and a quest for the forgiveness of God. The goat wasn't hated, but was a dramatic picture of the carrying away sins. It was the very opposite of a selfrighteous victimisation of someone else. Ever since 200 A.D., Christians have seen the scapegoat as a picture of Jesus. As it was led out to die in the wilderness bearing the sins of the people, so he was crucified outside Jerusalem for our sins. We are to be both forgiven and forgiving people.

By flying, men often rush into the midst of calamities.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/50561

By flying, men often rush into the midst of calamities.

Whoever despises himself nonetheless respects himself as one who despises.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/63665

Whoever despises himself nonetheless respects himself as one who despises.

We do not want the men of another color for our brothers-in-law, but we do want them for our brothers.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/4946

We do not want the men of another color for our brothers-in-law, but we do want them for our brothers.

Every animal loves itself.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/48832

Every animal loves itself.

Peace is our gift to each other.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/45908

Peace is our gift to each other.

They (religious conservatives) want to destroy us by going after every company that dares not treat gays like they're diseased ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/38659

They (religious conservatives) want to destroy us by going after every company that dares not treat gays like they're diseased pariahs.

Brooke was special in the sense that we grew up together on that island.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/31833

Brooke was special in the sense that we grew up together on that island.

Any expression of religious or cultural identity by anyone else is forbidden.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/28916

Any expression of religious or cultural identity by anyone else is forbidden.

Renowned Spenser, lie a thought more nigh To learned Chaucer, and rare Beaumont lie A little nearer Spenser, to ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/55308

Renowned Spenser, lie a thought more nigh To learned Chaucer, and rare Beaumont lie A little nearer Spenser, to make room For Shakespeare in your threefold, fourfold tomb.

Take heed of foul dirty wayes, and long sicknesse.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/49778

Take heed of foul dirty wayes, and long sicknesse.

Work while your strength and years permit you; crooked age will by-and-by come upon you with silent foot.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/50814

Work while your strength and years permit you; crooked age will by-and-by come upon you with silent foot.

The devil takes a hand in what is done in haste.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/12183

The devil takes a hand in what is done in haste.

You know what they say about Chicago.
