Every man is born under the yoke, and grows up beneath the oppressions of his age. He can only get a vision of the unselfish forces in the world by appealing to them, and every appeal is a call to arms. If he fights he must fight, not one man, but a conspiracy. He is always at war with a civilization. On his side is proverbial philosophy, a galaxy of invisible saints and sages, and the half-developed consciousness and professions of everybody. Against him is the world, and every selfish passion in his own heart.

He grabbed that rail, ... Secular education seems to me intellectually clean and comprehensible. Moral instruction seems to me unclean, intolerable; I would destroy it with fire. Teaching the Old Testament by itself means teaching ancient Hebrew ethics, which are simple, barbaric rudimentary, and, to a Christian, unsatisfying. Teaching moral instruction means teaching modern London, Birmingham and Boston ethics, which are not barbaric and rudimentary, but are corrupt, hysterical and crawling with worms, and which are to a Christian, not unsatisfying but detestable. The old Jew who says that you must fight only for your tribe is inadequate; but the modern prig who says you must never fight for anything is substantially and specifically immoral. I know quite well, of course, that the unreligious ethics suggested for modern schools do not verbally assert these things; they only talk about peaceful reform, true Christianity, and the importance of Count Tolstoy. It is all a matter of tone and implication--but then, so is all teaching. Education is implication. It is not the things you say which children respect; when you say things, they very commonly laugh and do the opposite. It is the things you assume that really sink into them. It is the things you forget even to teach that they learn.

The world is but a canvas to our imagination.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/20540

The world is but a canvas to our imagination.

Stress: The confusion created when one's mind overrides the body's basic desire to choke the living daylights out of some ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/57974

Stress: The confusion created when one's mind overrides the body's basic desire to choke the living daylights out of some jerk who desperately deserves it

Who has not hopedTo outrage an enemy's dignity?Who has not been sweptBy the wish to hurt? And who has not thought ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/27992

Who has not hopedTo outrage an enemy's dignity?Who has not been sweptBy the wish to hurt? And who has not thought that the impersonal worldDeserves no better than to be destroyedBy one fabulous sign of his displeasure? - The Face of Violence.

Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/395

Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.

It is the fundamental theory of all the more recent American law...that the average citizen is half-witted, and hence not ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/47477

It is the fundamental theory of all the more recent American law...that the average citizen is half-witted, and hence not to be trusted to either his own devices or his own thoughts.

I feel that the greatest reward for doing is the opportunity to do more.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/358

I feel that the greatest reward for doing is the opportunity to do more.

I figured something out in 2004 and last year kind of carried it over.
