This fact ought not to be taken to imply, however, that such an effort is unjustifiable and necessarily useless. The distinctiveness of the Biblical approach is its immediacy. The theistic proofs for God's existence constitute a laborious, painstaking, and patient justification of theism. They attempt to set forth in rational argument what the soul grasps intuitively. But for the Bible, the deepest proof of God's existence is just life itself. The knowledge of God and man's knowledge of himself are closely intertwined. If only God could be written off neatly and cleanly, how simple things would be! But the hound of heaven pads after us all. He does not let us go. There is no escaping him...; when least expected, he closes in. The explanation for this is man's creation in the image of God. His identity is known theologically, in relation to the God who as a man in his true significance cannot survive permanently in isolation from his Maker. Without God, man is the chance product of unthinking fate, and so of little worth. The current loss of identity and the emergence of the faceless man in today's culture are testimony to the effects of losing our God. The knowledge of God is given in the same movement in which we know ourselves.

Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/21405

Success is doing what you want to do, when you want, where you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.

Liberty's in every blow! Let us do or die.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/24683

Liberty's in every blow! Let us do or die.

Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/43451

Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling, and instinct, not by rule.

There is a powerful craving in most of us to see ourselves as instruments in the hands of others and ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/47572

There is a powerful craving in most of us to see ourselves as instruments in the hands of others and thus free ourselves from the responsibility for acts which are prompted by our own questionable inclinations and impulses. Both the strong and the weak grasp at this alibi. The latter hide their malevolence under the virtue of obedience: they acted dishonorably because they had to obey orders. This is testimony, the apostolic testimony, and this, with the energy of love, is the missionary motive. The insistent task of missionary education and responsibility is to engender this motive throughout the Church, a task that can only be accomplished as men are confronted anew with the message of the Bible and with its supreme and central story, the story of the cross.

Sancta Maria ad Nives.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/56708

Sancta Maria ad Nives.

It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/19335

It takes a great deal of history to produce a little literature.

A wise man does nothing by constraint.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/48825

A wise man does nothing by constraint.

If school results were the key to power, girls would be running the world.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/47045

If school results were the key to power, girls would be running the world.

A poet is an unhappy being whose heart is torn by secret sufferings, but whose lips are so strangely formed ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/46814

A poet is an unhappy being whose heart is torn by secret sufferings, but whose lips are so strangely formed that when the sighs and the cries escape them, they sound like beautiful music... and then people crowd about the poet and say to him: "Sing for us soon again;" that is as much as to say, "May new sufferings torment your soul.".

Enlarge the opportunity and the person will expand to fill it

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/45094

Enlarge the opportunity and the person will expand to fill it

Reviewers are usually people who would have been poets, historians, biographers, etc., if they could: they have tried their talents ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/10736

Reviewers are usually people who would have been poets, historians, biographers, etc., if they could: they have tried their talents at one or the other, and have failed; therefore they turn critics.

Troy owes to Homer what whist owes to Hoyle.

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/48778

Troy owes to Homer what whist owes to Hoyle.

According to these breathless reports and baseless hysteria, some have convinced the American Library Association that under the bipartisan Patriot ...

http://maxioms.com/maxiom/38747

According to these breathless reports and baseless hysteria, some have convinced the American Library Association that under the bipartisan Patriot Act, the FBI is not fighting terrorism.
